Rosenbach Foundation, 2007LabelDuring six years in Paris, between 1948 and 1954, Ellsworth Kelly abandoned figuration and developed the intensely felt abstraction for which he is well known. Reflections in the Seine I is one of several drawings related to his painting Seine. While the painting is a geometricized representation of the irregular, flickering reflection of light on the wavering surface of the River Seine, Reflections in the Seine I emphasizes the weight and darkness of water (as opposed to surface light). |
